East Side Resurrection Bay Trip Descriptions
Seward Kayaking - East Side Resurrection Bay
Kayakers Cove is a wilderness hostel located approx. 11 mi.
South of Seward, Alaska near Eldorado Narrows on Resurrection Bay. We can provide guide service to hostel guests that are staying at the hostel. This is one of the key destinations in Resurrection Bay

Depart by sea kayak to Kayakers Cove. After gearing up and doing a little stretch to loosen up our bodies before paddle. Paddle past water falls, alpine glaciers, abundant sea life, and scenic snow covered mountains. Stop along the way and break for hot drinks, snacks and sight seeing opportunities. This paddle will also include lunches while paddling to our destination and on the
return paddle to Seward.
We see whales sometimes on this trip and sometimes observe more that one type. We paddle past bird rookeries and view the Stellar Sea Lions haul out from a safe and prudent distance.. ..
Hiking is a nice option that is sometimes chosen by our guests, hiking up the trail that originates at the rear of the hostel lodge we will hike up a fern and moss laden trail up to a rocky saddle that overlooks the cape. This trail is a moderate hike and we recommend that anyone hiking the trail carry hydration and be in reasonable physical condition for this moderate hike. If not sure
check with a physician!

Just a thought...........about smaller groups!
We limit our groups to no more than 6 folks + your guide for guided trips and guided rental options.
Exceptions can be made for family, or unified group outings if requested.
We have done a very unscientific survey amongst ourselves and have determined that most of us have never done things with more than 6 people that have randomly been put in a group that did not end up in a frustrating and disappointing experience!
Its up to you, Think about it, its your vacation?
Always ask how many may be on your trip if you are wanting to go out and adventure in Alaska!

East Side and West Side of the Bay. Each side has destinations that are very scenic.
Wildlife is often viewed on each side and is similar.
The major differences would be the 3 alpine glaciers, large coves, and spires along the east side.
The west side has a salmon stream very close to Lowell Point and Fort McGilvery and abandoned military gun battery that is viewable by hiking at Caines Head also on the West Side.

We load up into our van and head out to Lowell Point Recreation area just south of Seward. We unload and outfit the kayaks with the proper gear. We use very stable double kayaks for this trip, and the kayaks do have compartments to stash your rain gear or sweaters. Dry bags and zip lock bags are provided to keep gear and cameras dry, please let the guide know of your needs. The group will go over the very basics of sea kayaking. Your guide will provide instructions for the groups safety and procedures should any emergency arise. Your group will then start paddling south on Resurrection Bay closely following the shore. It seems that there is as much to see on the shore as there is on the water! Otters! Eagles! Sea Lions! Bears! Oh MY! Oh yeah, let's not forget the salmon when they are getting ready to spawn. This trip will go to Tonsina creek, and depending on the time, weather, and group, we will decide if paddling on to Bridal Veil
is appropriate. At Bridal Veil beach we will beach the kayaks, stretch our legs, and share snacks and hydration. A discussion of the salmon stream and the types of salmon that spawn here generally happens here and we try to answer your questions for a bit. Yep, Kayaking can be educational as well as recreational. After this break we will paddle back to Lowell Point. This is a great trip for persons wanting to do a multi adventure day, this trip provides time to combine this experience with yet another adventure during the same day!

This paddle will bypass Tonsina Creek and break at Bridal Veil or Derby cove depending on conditions and the guides recommendations.
Snacks and hydration will be distributed and generally a discussion of the points of interest are discussed while stretching and relaxing for a few minutes.
After this break, the paddle will proceed along the shore heading southward until we get to the remains of the old Army Dock at Caines Head.(North Beach)
Time permitting we will stretch and rehydrate and decide to hike up to the abandoned Fort McGilvery or just lounge and break out lunch and maybe paddle a bit further past Caines Head out to the Key Hole. The Key Hole is tide dependent as far as having water flowing in and out of it. Puffins get more plentiful as we go past Caines Head.
The trip returns to Caines Head and makes preparations to paddle back to Lowell Point for pick up by our van.
We practice and endorse the Leave No Trace Ethic! We hope you will also.
Tonsina Point is located approximately 1.0 nm south of Lowell Point Recreation Area on the west side of the bay.
Overnight Kayaking Camping trips are available to Caines Head fully guided or as guided rental trips!
priced same as Thumb Cove trips above!
